The race to find the next great light heavyweight or heavyweight MMA fighter is a contest more about potential than proven cage work. When it comes to developing fighters in the sport's two biggest weight classes the regional scene's lack of "big man" depth provides prospects with slim options.
Fighting out of the MMA hotbed of New Mexico heavyweight Tyler East (10-3) is a three year pro at the ripe age of 22. Currently in the midst of six fight winning streak the lanky 6'6 East holds notable wins over Nick Gaston and Esteves Jones. Now training at Jackson's MMA in Albuquerque, East is a young, well coached heavyweight which should garner him serious attention from any and all national MMA promotions.
Connecticut's Perry Filkins stops former Strikeforce fighter Louis Taylor at Combat Zone 40
Middleweight prospect Perry Filkins (6-1) picked up the biggest win of his career on the undercard on Combat Zone 40. CZ 40 took place at Rockingham Park in Salem, New Hampshire. A promising prospect out of the New England region of the US, Filkins beat down former Strikeforce fighter Louis Taylor (7-3) over the course of two rounds.
In round one Filkins peppered Taylor with punches and pressured him with a barrage of strikes. Taylor scored with a pair of takedown attempts but Filkins was able to make his way back to the feet with little damage. The second frame saw Filkins continue his assault in the stand-up game.

After an impressive performance that belies the fight metrics Michael Bisping (22-4) looks primed and deserving of the winner of Anderson Silva (31-4) vs. Chael Sonnen (27-11-1). Despite the 5-1 odds that bookmakers had on this fight Bisping wrestled and struck his way to an impressive performance against Sonnen at UFC on Fox 2. Bisping's more effective striking, wall walking and jiu jitsu on the ground made the first two rounds of the three round fight closer than expected.

A sign of how the UFC, Bellator and Strikeforce are handling their rosters the welterweight and middleweight divisions have gone through a massive changeover in the past 12 months. 170 pounds remains talent rich in prospects despite seeing many of its best fighters get scooped up in 2011. At 185 pounds prospects from Europe and Brazil dominant the rankings in a weight class normally seen as shallow in the US.
In the highly competitive Brazilian MMA circuit, Team Nogueira welterweight Andre Santo (28-6) surged to the head of the pack in 2011 with a 6-2 record. After a two fight losing streak in the span of 16 days in May 2011, Santos finished the year with four straight wins. In October Santos may have secured his call up to a major US promotion with an impressive one night tournament victory at Bitetti Combat 10.
