Heavyweight prospect Tyler King dominates, UFC vet Marcus Davis wins at NEF Fight Night 7

On a regional show with a head scratching 30 fights booked it was a pair of Northeast prospects and a former UFC mainstay who picked up critical victories at NEF Fight Night 7. From the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine 15-time UFC veteran Marcus Davis (22-9) outpointed welterweight prospect Darrius Heyliger (5-2) in the main event of NEF Fight Night 7. Davis set the pace of the fight and beat the younger taller Heyliger to the punch for 15 minutes in route to a unanimous decision nod.
In the co-main event Massachusetts big man Tyler King (7-1) overwhelmed Travis Bartlett (5-4). The first round began with King rag dolling Bartlett. After a few knees to the body King took Bartlett down and showed off his improving ground game. On top of Bartlett, King quietly and calmly worked for an arm triangle choke submission.

Ultimate Victory Challenge returned with yet another bang on Friday night, as UVC 23: Invasion went down at the Aladdin Shrine Center in Columbus, Ohio.
In the main event, UVC middleweight champion Luke Zachrich (12-2) moved his UVC record to 2-0 in a non-title bout against Marcus Finch (7-7) with a unanimous decision. Zachrich controlled the bout in all aspects, and it seemed at times like there were two completely different fights going on in one. The first round mostly featured Zachrich showcasing his ground game, as he transitioned on the ground and spent most of the first frame trying to submit Finch.

Controversy abounds from Tampa up to Connecticut as Florida promotion the Xtreme Fighting Championships and XFC lightweight champion Nick Newell (9-0) have parted ways. The XFC fired the first shot with a well timed early Friday morning press release at 9:15 AM ET on May 10th. The title of the release read "XFC president discusses Nick Newell's unwillingness to defend title".
Throughout the XFC's six year history promoting MMA events mostly in south Florida, Newell was by the far the regional show's biggest homegrown star. Newell's last four fights were under the XFC banner and the promotion heavily promoted him for their upcoming card on June 14th in Tampa. In Newell's last fight for the XFC he headlined a December event and captured the organization's lightweight title belt from Bellator veteran Eric Reynolds (16-6).
MMA bill passes through Connecticut House of Representatives, moves closer to legalized MMA in state

Lorenzo Fertitta, The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Chairman & CEO, applauded the Connecticut General Assembly's House of Representatives for passing HB-5277 today by an overwhelming 117-26 vote. The bill would legalize mixed martial arts (MMA) and add Connecticut to the list of 48 states where MMA is currently legal. He said MMA fans must now turn their attention to the Senate and urge the leadership to allow a vote on the bill.
"I want to thank the House members who supported this bill. It's the right thing to do for the thousands of Connecticut MMA and UFC fans, for economic development in the state and for jobs," Fertitta said. "We will now turn our attention to the Senate and urge the leadership to permit the bill to be voted upon. We are confident that if Senators are allowed to vote on the bill, it will pass with strong bipartisan support."

Top east coast mixed martial arts promotion Cage Fury Fighting Championships (CFFC) will hold its sixth event of the year on Saturday May 11th in New Jersey. From the Borgata Hotel Casino in Atlantic City the main event will be a welterweight title fight between champion George Sullivan (12-3) and challenger Brandon Becker (6-0). The 32 year old Sullivan is on a four fight winning streak and looking for his shot at a UFC or Bellator call-up.
The co-main event of CFFC 24 will feature one of the best 125 pound prospects in the US. Prospect Sean Santella (12-3-1) will defend his title versus Pennsylvania flyweight Dave Morgan (5-2). A five star prospect at 125 pounds, Santella is a on a four fight winning streak and last stepped in the cage for CFFC in February.

It is not always pretty but sometimes regional heavyweight MMA can produce some spectacular knockouts. In Columbus, Ohio UVC booked a pair of heavyweights making their pro debuts as Tim Dunn (1-0) took on James Dishong (0-1). The fight video begins at the 6:35 mark with Dunn in the black shorts.
Rob Font upsets top prospect Saul Almeida with close decision at CES MMA Undisputed 2

Rhode Island promotion CES MMA returned to the Twin Events Center in Lincoln for their first event of 2013. Titled Undisputed 2 the 11 fight card was anchored by WEC vet Mike Campbell (13-4) defeating Abner Lloveras (15-7) in a five round title fight. In the co-main event a pair of local prospects under the age of 25 squared off as five star prospect Saul Almeida (12-3) was paired with Rob Font (5-1).
Round one saw both fighters trade strikes before Font shot in for multiple takedown attempts. In the final minute of the round Font finally was able to work Almeida to the mat but the Brazilian worked back to his feet moments later. In round two neither fighter was able to take the other down.

Sports are games of inches. From baseball to basketball and for the past twenty years or so mixed martials arts have all tested the tried and true imperial measurement sport's cliché. In theory, on paper, by the measurables Connecticut lightweight Nick Newell (9-0) should be at a disadvantage when locked in a cage with another human being.
In practice, through nine professional fights, Newell has left doubters speechless. In 2012 Newell went from a human interest story about a MMA fighter with a partially developed left arm to one of the best 155 pound prospects in the sport. With three wins on the year, including a dominant 82 second submission for the XFC lightweight title, Newell captioned 2012 with yet another old phrase; actions speak louder than words.
Newell joins Tyron Woodley in 2009, Phil Davis in 2010, and Chris Weidman in 2012 as ULTMMA.com prospect of the year award recipients. ULTMMA.com recently spoke with Newell about his UFC potential, athletic background, and proving people wrong.
Flyweight prospect Nick Cottone grabs win number 10 with decision at Locked in the Cage 11

New Jersey flyweight Nick Cottone (10-3-1) added another belt to his collection in the main event of Locked in the Cage 11. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania card closed with Cottone outpointing Indiana based flyweight Brandon Inskeep (5-8). The victory was a needed rebound for Cottone who lost at LITC 9 in October 2011.
Once a man who couldn't get a fight in his proper weight class, Cottone briefly walked away from the sport back in 2007. With a 4-1 mark in his last five fights the 5'7 Cottone is a well-rounded flyweight who may eventually get his crack in the UFC's new 125 pound division. A four star flyweight prospect, Cottone entered 2012 as the number ten 125 pound prospect in MMA per ULTMMA.com's 2012 rankings.
