In any other pro sport the chances of a 36 year old coming off a five year layoff making it to the big leagues lie somewhere between slim and none. Ah but in MMA and more importantly in the sport's heavyweight division your odds increase dramatically if you have knockout power in both hands and work with the right gym. On June 2nd the combat sports world will welcome back Power MMA's Rob Woodin (6-0) to active competition.
Woodin will headline Phoenix promotion Coalition of Combat's second event versus 26 year old Dan Charles (3-0). Nearly 12 full years after he made his pro MMA debut, Woodin's frantic life outside the cage may have hit a lull long enough for him to make one final run at becoming a full time fighter. Woodin knows that a potential fast-track to the UFC begins with a highlight reel performance versus Charles.
ULTMMA.com sat down with Woodin after a recent practice with his team at Power MMA. Woodin talks about his motivation to get back in the cage, training at Power MMA and explains what is like for a part time fighter as well as a full time dad.

A pair of Strikeforce veterans in action was the main attraction of a King of the Cage event at Coeur d'Alene Casino Resort Hotel. KOTC Wildcard took place in Worley, Idaho. At the top of the 12 fight card Trevor Prangley (25-9) looked to build on a win earlier in the month in India.
Prangley was matched up with former welterweight George Stork (6-6). The 39 year old Prangley needed nearly full rounds to put away Stork. Midway through the third round Prangley took Stork's back and choked him out. Prangley has now won two in a row to start out 2012 after going 0-3 in 2011.

Upstart California MMA promotion 559 fights is the newest baby for Jeremy Luchau and business partner Joey Perez. Based in the Central Valley 559 Fights is the next step for Luchau who built his name up as the Entertainment Coordinator of the highly successful Tachi Palace Fights. 559 Fights will hold it's 10 bout debut card in Hanford at the Kings Fair Grounds on Saturday April 21st.
At the top of the card 22 year old women's flyweight Kristen Gatz (4-1) takes on Brianna Van Buren (1-0). Coming off a long layoff the fight for Gatz's will likely be her final before she turns pro. In the co-main event former Hanford High wrestling star Steven Juarez (0-0) makes his MMA debut at featherweight versus Gerardo Garcia (0-0).
California promotion Extreme Fighters World Championships held their second event at The City National Grove in Anaheim. At the top of the card 42 year old Antonio McKee picked up his third straight win. McKee, a onetime UFC lightweight, used his wrestling to suffocate Chad Dietmyer (8-2) on his way to a three round decision victory.
In welterweight action prospect Jesse Juarez (17-8) suffered a tough setback versus Brazilian Leandro Silva (17-6). In a "winner gets a call to the majors" type fight, both Silva and Juarez traded strikes on the feet for much of the first round. Controversy set-in between rounds one and two when the ringside doctor quickly called the bout off after it was deemed Juarez suffered blurred vision in his right eye.
California promotion Xplode Fight Series held their third event of 2012 with a massive 15 fight event. In the main event (video above) local California prospects Jason Miknuk (4-2) and David Salas (4-2) continued the breakneck pace of the bout sheet with the ninth first round finish of the night. Miknuk stiffened Salas with a solid knee and finished him with punches in the fight's opening exchange.
A 6'1 featherweight prospect the win for Miknuk snapped a two fight losing skid.
