Strikeforce looks to Phoenix’s Dodge Theater for Aug. 13 Challengers show
Strikeforce's second Challengers card of the summer and first show in Arizona will likely take place at Phoenix's Dodge Theater.
Sources close to the event have informed ULTMMA.com (www.ULTMMA.com) of the planned location for the Friday August 13th fight card.
The Dodge Theater is an indoor venue that seats 5,500 people. Located in the heart of downtown Phoenix the venue is normally reserved for musical acts, but has hosted boxing events in the past.
Strikeforce's debut in Phoenix is scheduled to be a part of the organization's Challengers series designed to highlight up and coming prospects. The Showtime televised portion of the card is expected feature local Arizona fighter Joe Riggs, former Olympian Daniel Cormier, and possibly female fighter Erin Toughill.
Arizona is a state rich in mixed martial arts history. The Grand Canyon state is home to one of the longest running and successful regional promotions in Phoenix's Rage in the Cage. Local state gyms such as Arizona Combat Sports, MMA Lab, and Southwest MMA have consistently fed national organizations with talent.
Over the past several years the Arizona State University wrestling program has become synonymous with churning out MMA fighters. Current UFC fighters Cain Velasquez, Ryan Bader, Aaron Simpson, and C.B Dollaway all wrestled for the Sun Devils, while current five star 145 lb prospect Erik Larkin also wore the school's signature maroon and gold colors on the mat.
