Matt Horwich pounds out Jake Rosholt & prospect Trey Houston shines at XFN in Oklahoma

At Xtreme Fight Night in Tulsa, Oklahoma promoter Dale Cook gave local combat sports fans a 14 bout card that featured boxing, kickboxing along with several mixed martial arts fights. In the main event former Oklahoma State University wrestler and UFC middleweight prospect Jake Rosholt (7-3) faced off with former IFL champion Matt Horwich (27-17-1) in a 190 pound catchweight fight.

A three time NCAA champion at OK ST, Rosholt fired off numerous takedowns on Horwich in the first 10 minutes of their fight. In the latter portion of round number two Horwich was consistently able to reverse the position on Rosholt and work him with effective ground n' pound strikes.

The final round saw Horwich land a takedown on Rosholt. On the ground the veteran of over 45 pro fights, Horwich took Rosholt's back and unleashed an barrage of unblocked punches before the referee stepped in to stop the fight. Horwich moves to 2-3 in his last five contests, with his other win a choke out of ex-UFC title challenger Thales Leites.

Rosholt is now 1-1 since being cut by the UFC in November 2009.

The top prospect on the card was former Strikeforce Challengers competitor Trey Houston (6-0). A middleweight out of Tulsa, Houston was booked versus Brandon Lyons (4-2). Both solid 22 year old 185 pound prospects, Lyons took the fight to Houston early as he scored the first takedown of the fight.

Off his back Houston's jiu-jitsu game came to the forefront as Lyons fended off both a triangle and armbar submission attempts. A final armbar attempt was secured by Houston and forced Lyons to tap just 44 seconds into the opening frame.

All six of Houston's career wins have come via submission; with four coming in round one. Houston's combination of size and athleticism makes him one of the best pound for pound prospects in the Midwest. With the win Houston also has established himself as a legit four star prospect and should be monitored closely by national MMA promotions like the UFC and Strikeforce in 2011.
