Prospect report: Douglas Lima shines at MFC 29 and Alex Garcia falters in Canada at Ringside 10
Two of the top welterweight prospects under the age of 25 competed over the weekend in Canada. Number nine in the ULTMMA.com 170 pound prospect rankings, Alex Garcia (6-1) matched-up with Ultimate Fighter season 11 cast member Seth Baczynski (13-7) at Ringside 10 in Montreal, Quebec.
In a fight for the interim Ringside welterweight title Baczynski set the pace early versus Garcia. A wrestler by trait Garcia was unable to keep Baczynski down in the opening round. Baczynski won the battle in the clinch and pressured Garcia with submissions that stifled the hometown favorite's offense. Round one ended with Baczynski taking Garcia's back in search of a choke out.
In the second frame Baczynski worked his way on top of Garcia. The six year vet finished Garcia's with punches from the top that earned Baczynski a TKO win at the 2:44 mark of round two. The win was Baczynski's second straight for the Arizona based welterweight.
For Garcia it was the first loss of his career and also his first bout with anyone with UFC level experience. A member of renowned MMA trainer Firas Zahabi's camp in Canada, Garcia is a 170 pound prospect known for his powerful offensive skill set. In the biggest test of his career the young Garcia's offense was stifled by the more experienced Baczynski.
A solid four star prospect with world class trainers and sparring partners around him, how Garcia's returns from the first loss of his career will set the tone for how the rest of 2011 turns out for one of Canada's brightest up and comers.
The rise of welterweight prospect Douglas Lima (17-3) may have reached its pinnacle in the main event of Maximum Fighting Championship 29. A five star welterweight Lima was booked versus former UFC middleweight Terry Martin (21-9). Not known for his striking skills Lima came out with a gameplan to test Martin on the feet. After a few jabs to gauge the distance Lima planted a right hook on Martin that dropped him to the floor.
Lima hovered over a downed Martin and finished him with punches 1:14 into round one. Lima has now six straight, including the past three under the MFC banner. After a stretch where he lost three of four fights from May 2008 to June 2009, Lima has been untouchable since; competing at both 185 and 170 pounds. Lima is ready made to compete in the UFC or Strikeforce's welterweight division.
Expect Lima to either jump to the big leagues in his next fight or take on one more ex-UFC welterweight in the MFC and with an impressive win remove the prospect label off his resume.Lima sits on top of the ULTMMA.com welterweight prospect rankings.
