Chris Barnett defeats Walt Harris in battle of MMA heavyweight prospects at WEF 46
A handful of Sunshine state prospects packed the undercard of World Extreme Fighting 46 in Orlando, Florida. In a rare clash of heavyweight prospects Tampa's Chris Barnett (7-1) outpointed up and comer Walt Harris (5-2) to a three round unanimous decision. A savvy grappler, who weighed-in at a disappointing 294 pounds, Barnett took Harris down early and often for the much of the 15 minute fight.
With the fight on the mat Barnett's underrated Jiu Jitsu game suffocated Harris, with the former amateur boxer unable to work the fight back to the feet. For Barnett the win was his second in a row. Despite missing the 265 pound heavyweight limit Barnett continues to find ways to get his hand raised.
The 24 year old Barnett is one of the more all action heavyweights you will find at the regional US level. After a pro debut victory versus Jonathan Ivey, Barnett has bolstered his resume with wins over the likes of Joel Wyatt, Daniel Perez and Mario Rinaldi.
Barnett is the number 11 rated MMA heavyweight prospect according to ULTMMA.com.
The decision loss for Harris snaps a impressive four fight win streak. Blessed with big league striking skills Harris remains a must see heavyweight prospect. Harris will need to log some more cage time and rack up two or three more wins before he should get another crack at fellow top 25 ranked heavyweight prospect.
The 27 year old Harris remains at number 15 in the ULTMMA.com MMA heavyweight prospect rankings.
Four star middleweight prospect Gareth Joseph (11-3) notched his eleventh career victory with a hard fought spilt decision over Brett Chism (11-11). A one-time Strikeforce fighter, Joseph utilized an arsenal of takedowns to control Chism and win on two of the three judge's scorecards. Still just 26 years old Joseph is one of the best 185 pound fighters on the Southeast MMA scene.
