Fight Club 8
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
9/18/09

Two of the top unsigned prospects in MMA were in action over the weekend as welterweight Ryan Ford and light heavyweight Lew Polley fought in separate bouts that headlined Canada's Fight Club 8 in Edmonton.

Canadian Ryan Ford 10-2 proved to be too much for an overmatched Markhaile Wederbrun 5-5. Ford showed off his ever improving ground work locking in a rear naked choke inside of 90 seconds. The win is the second in a row for Ford, both coming under the Fight Club banner, who last suffered defeat versus Pat Healy via split decision in February 2009.

Always a highly touted prospect, the question has not been if, but when will Ford get the call up from a national promotion. After a public falling out with the Maximum Fighting Championship, Ford inked a deal with The Fight Club promotion and has already fought twice for them.

Ryan Ford is currently ranked number 6 in the Ultmma50, ranking of the top unsigned local MMA prospects. Ford's next fight will most likely come before the end of year and may be his last with Fight Club as he looks to land deal with the UFC or Strikeforce at the start of 2010.

Former American Top Team, now Team Quest 205 pound fighter Lew Polley turned in a gutsy performance against UFC veteran Victor Valimaki 15-5. Polley already held an upset win over Canada's Roger Hollett but could not reproduce the same result against Edmonton's Valimaki. Valimaki only dropped one round of the five round title tilt to Polley.

After losing his only two fights in the UFC to David Heath and Alessio Sakara, Valimaki has now gone 6-1 since leaving the Octagon in 2007. With his record now 10-3, Polley will now look to get one or two more wins versus big name opposition in order to continue on his path to a major promotion.

Due to his age, still just 28, and his history of being associated with two of the top camps in the sport Polley is still rated as a four star light heavyweight MMA prospect and clocks in at number 43 in the Ultmma50; a pound for pound ranking of the top 50 unsigned MMA prospects.
