Hernani Perpetuo wins one night tourney & Glover Teixeira stops Marcio Cruz at Fight Club 1 in Rio

Despite some fight week hiccups that shook up the bout order, Brazilian promotion Fight Club's debut event featured a balanced mixed of prospects and big show vets. Fight Club 1 Brazilian Stars was held at the Via Show in Rio de Janeiro. The top prospect in action was four star light heavyweight Glover Teixeira (13-2).

Teixeira moved up to heavyweight to take on former UFC fighter Marcio Cruz (7-3). Against a former ADCC champion Teixeira's takedown defense allowed him to shuck any and all takedown attempts from Cruz in the first round.

In the second frame Teixeira continued to win the standup game versus an overmatched Cruz. After a takedown attempt brought the fight to the ground it was Teixeira, a BJJ black belt himself, on top of the bigger Cruz. From the mount position delivered some heavy ground n' pound punches that forced Cruz to cover up. The referee called the bout in Teixeira's favor 4:21 into the second round.

Teixeira has now won 11 straight fights dating back to May 2006; a winning streak rarely seen for a unsigned light heavyweight prospect. Ready made for a major league promotion, visa issues aside, Teixeira's next bout should come in the UFC or Strikeforce cage.

Nova Uniao gym product Hernani Perpetuo (12-3) captured the Fight Club grand prix title with two wins in one night. In the semifinals Perpetuo grinded out a three decision over Daniel Acacio (24-12) despite suffering multiple cuts from elbows. In the finals Perpetuo upset two time UFC vet Edilberto de Oliveira (17-7-2) with another three round split decision.

As a welterweight prospect Perpetuo has potential to make noise stateside due his tournament victory as well as his affiliation with the Nova Uniao gym, home to Jose Aldo, Diego Nunes and Wagnney Fabiano.
