NCAA Division I champ Darrion Caldwell gets opponent for pro debut and Josh Sampo vs. Rafael De Freitas set for LFC 14 in TX
August 9, 2012
Some shake-ups will change the maind card of Texas' Legacy Fighting Championships' 14th event. LFC 14 is set Friday September 14th at the Houston Arena Theater. The main event will be a battle of Texas fight scene veterans as Jeff Rexroad (5-1) takes on Jorge Patino (27-13-1) for the LFC 170 pound strap.
A trio of high level prospects highlights the LFC 14 undercard. Hyped NCAA National Champion wrestler Darrion Caldwell (0-0) will make his professional debut versus unknown Harrison Truscott (0-0). Caldwell, a MMA featherweight, is a two time NCAA All American in 2008 and 2009 as well as 2009 national champion for the North Carolina State Wolf Pack.
The 24 year old Caldwell out of New Jersey has prepped for his MMA debut at Power MMA in Arizona alongside UFC vets Ryan Bader, C.B Dollaway and 145 pound prospect Jade Porter. Caldwell's wrestling resume makes him an instant four star prospect at 145 pounds and his development in the cage will be a storyline worth following heading into 2013.
Flyweights Josh Sampo (7-2) and Rafael De Freitas (5-0) will square off with the winner likely getting added to the UFC's 125 pound division in 2013. The 28 year old Sampo last competed in July at Rumble Time Promotions where he earned a quick first round submission. Sampo, a Missouri native, has submitted four opponents overall in his career.
With top 15 prospect talent Sampo will look to use the win over De Freitas as a way to further distant himself from a brutal third KO at the hands of Will Campuzano in May of this year.
A Brazilian training out of Gracie Barra New Mexico, De Freitas will step into the cage versus coming off a 12 month layoff. A five year pro De Freitas' sporadic fight schedule has netted four submission wins in five pro fights. At 28 years old De Freitas has the talent to compete at the next level but needs a signature over a UFC vet or a fellow prospect before he takes his game to the next level.
De Freitas is ranked as the number 19 best flyweight prospect in MMA according to ULTMMA.com.
