9-0
Signature win: October 28, 2008 Knockout of Clay French at King of the Cage-Grinder
20 year old prospect Rory MacDonald has reached the pinnacle of his profession seven months prior to his 21st birthday. The Canadian welterweight, who has competed in pro MMA bouts since he was 16, will make his UFC debut versus 10 year veteran Mike Guymon at UFC Fight Night 20.
Entering the fight game as lanky 155 pounder MacDonald's body has developed into a big 170 pounder.
Winning his first four pro bouts via submission the move up a weight class has seen MacDonald add more power behind his strikes. MacDonald a, submission ace at heart, has been able to work in an improved stand up game into his already impressive skill set.
MacDonald is a former King of the Cage lightweight champion, has proven to be a top shelf athlete throughout his four year pro career. In nine wins MacDonald has yet to go to a judge's decision. With each passing victory Macdonald has showcased a balanced offensive attack finishing four of his opponents via (T) KO and five via submission.
For his first fight inside the Octagon MacDonald draws another former King of the Cage player in Guymon. Both fighters are making their debuts and that is where the similarities end. Guymon has a strong wrestling base that should test MacDonald's take defense early and often.
Avoiding long periods on his back will be key to MacDonald's success versus Guymon. MacDonald holds the edge in the striking and submission department over Guymon.
If, MacDonald is able to avoid a case of "big fight" jitters, the Canadian Phenom has the potential to overwhelm Guymon in a kickboxing exhibition or run through him with his combination of youth and athleticism.
Prior to signing with the UFC Rory MacDonald was a highly regarded five star welterweight prospect and checked in at number 10 in the ULTMMA50; a pound for pound listing of the 50 unsigned prospects in all of mixed martial arts.
