Ypsilanti, MI-- Despite some scheduling changes the first edition of the Xtreme Kombat League put together a solid eight fight pro card on the campus of Eastern Michigan University. A heavyweight main event featuring four star prospect Scott Barrett and former UFC title contender Jeff Monson was scrapped less than 24 hours before the opening bell.
Monson pulled out of the bout with an apparent back injury.
A five round lightweight title fight between Ultimate Fighter season five cast member Corey Hill (3-3) and Canadian prospect Mark Holst (8-1) would take the new main event slot.
The opening frame saw Hill use his wrestling to score takedowns early and often versus the shorter Holst. Working from the top position Hill controlled much of round one using a combination of punches and efficient short elbows to smother Holst.
To start the second round Hill once again was able to get on top of Holst. The 25 year old Holst was more active during the second, attempting a guillotine choke from his back before sweeping Hill. Once positioned in side-control Holst diligently worked for a Kimura submission until finally inducing the tap out from Hill with 54 seconds remaining in the round.
Holst, who hails from Quebec, has now won three fights in a row dating back to March 2009. Hill is 1-1 outside of the UFC since coming back from a devastating leg injury that put him on the shelf for 14 months.
In other action former UFC heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez (40-11) steamrolled Brian Ryan (18-6) on his way to his fifth straight win. Rodriguez was able to out-grapple Ryan for the better part of seven minutes before securing mount in the second round and finishing the match with a classic display of ground n' pound.
