Hawaii Galaxy MMA results – Junk vs. Scherner ruled N/C & 135lb prospect Tyson Nam loses in upset
Honolulu, HI-The main event of Galaxy MMA's debut show ended a mere 30 seconds into the opening round. In a match-up of former UFC hopefuls heavyweights Fabiano Scherner (8-8) and Scott Junk (6-2-1) both were looking to rebound off of losses.
Following a brief feeling out process Scherner landed an unintentional low blow on Junk that dropped the heavyweight to his knees. Junk laid on the cage floor for several minutes before he informed the ringside doctors he could no long continue. The fight was ruled a no contest with the official end coming just 27 seconds into round one.
For Junk, a Kailua native, it was his first fight since an unsuccessful run on season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter reality show. The Brazilian Scherner made a brief appearance in the UFC from 2005-2006 where he went 0-2 with defeats to Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera.
In the co-main event two local bantamweights collided as Tyson Nam (8-3) met Keola Silva (2-0).The fight was a homecoming for Nam who had not competed in his home state of Hawaii since 2008. In 2009, Nam moved to Oregon to train at Team Quest.
Nam entered the fight on a cool four fight winning streak that saw him mainly compete in the Northwest part of the US. Silva, fighting out of Waialua, stepped in the cage with one win and one no contest both versus the same opponent.
Three rounds of back and forth action saw Silva control the pace of the fight with his wrestling and takedowns. The second round was the strongest for Nam, briefly knocking down and dropping with strikes Silva. The judges at ringside awarded the fight to Silva by majority decision.
Despite the loss the 26 year old Nam still remains a four star prospect at 135 pounds due to his first class striking and the level of competition he has faced.
