Art of Fighting 8 results – 155lb prospect Eric Reynolds gets back in the win column
Florida's Art of Fighting MMA promotion made its return to the Germain Arena in Estero with a card packed with company mainstays. The best pure prospect on the card was local lightweight Eric Reynolds (13-4) out of Bradenton, FL.
Perhaps best known for his appearance in the 2009 Bellator Fighting Championship 155 pound tournament loss to Eddie Alvarez, Reynolds has never been protected as a prospect. The 24 year old turned a corner in his level competition after jumping out to a 9-0 record to begin his MMA career.
Matched up with former one time IFL welterweight competitor Travis Cox (6-8), Reynolds was looking for stability after posting a 2-3 record in his five previous fights. From the opening minute of the first round a stand-up battle ensued between the two men. A missed high kick and subsequent slip by Cox lead to a case of déjà-vu for Reynolds. Reynolds was disqualified from his last fight in October due to a illegal strike and kicked Cox in the head while he was still on the mat midway into the first round.
Given two minutes to recover Cox gamely finished out round one with another stand-up exchange. In the second period, Reynolds took control of Cox and eventually locked in a fight ending rear naked choke 90 seconds into the round.
Now training with American Top Team in Coconut Creek, FL Reynolds stock is still high as a prospect in the155 pound division. With third round losses to Alvarez and Jorge Masvidal in Bellator Fighting Championships chalked up as learning experiences, Reynolds is one of the best under 25 lightweight prospects in MMA.
The ATT fighter is currently number 43 in the ULTMMA50; a pound for pound listing of the top 50 unsigned prospects in mixed martial arts.
